18th Century French Iron Pestle and Mortar painted red
This is such an lovely example of an 18th Century French primitive and ancient iron pestle and mortar with applied carrying handles on each side and painted red. The mortar has a wonderful bowl shape, smooth rounded bottom and wide mouth and could have been used in a kitchen to grind, pound and mix herbs or an apothecary to crush various ingredients to make medications.
The wear to the base and body clearly indicate many years of use resulting in a superb untouched patina.
